People who have friends who intentionally harm themselves are more likely to begin self-injuring. Life issues. Some people who injure themselves were neglected or abused (sexually, physically or emotionally) or experienced other traumatic events.
These can be caused by memories of how the injury occurred or from unhappiness at the appearance of the scar. Studies in both South Africa and England show that the presence of scar tissue can have strong psychological effects. A survey recently conducted through social media outlets in South Africa showed that about 40 percent of women are self-conscious about their scars, which can cause feelings of embarrassment, anger, fear, anxiety and sadness.
Psychological impacts are associated with scars from auto accidents, violent crime and serious burns. Positive feelings can also be associated with scars resulting from Caesarian sections and child birth. Another study, which was conducted in Great Britain, showed that women who had negative feelings regarding their Caesarian births associated negative feelings with their abdominal scars. Social, emotional and psychological effects of scars are especially notable on individuals with visible scars.
Patients in a variety of studies are known to suffer from low self-esteem and embarrassment when carrying visible scars on the face, neck, arms and hands. Covering these scars with long hair, high-collared clothing and gloves, for example, helps people to hide the disfigurement. They may also be prompted to stop participating in activities where their scars will show and people may ask discomforting questions. One way to reduce the negative feelings associated with scars is to reduce the visible scarring on the body.
This can help the patient to heal both emotionally and physically. Scar reduction surgery can create new scar lines that blend into skin creases more effectively or have a straighter line, which is less noticeable. While there will still be a scar, it will be less noticeable and may heal with a thinner scar line.
Insiders say Megyn Kelly’s days on ‘Today’ are numbered Rock provocateur Marilyn Manson revealed his severely scarred hand as he opened up at Cannes Lions about his music, drug use, sex life and the Columbine massacre. During a wildly entertaining speech that veered from sardonic wit to bizarre tales of his childhood, Manson, dressed head to toe in black, repeatedly gestured with his pale left hand, which appeared to be crisscrossed with red scars. My walls were covered in scrawlings of the lyrics and cocaine bags nailed to the wall … I was struggling to deal with being alone and being forsaken and being betrayed by putting your trust in one person, and making the mistake of that being the wrong person.

January 7th Being an ex self-harmer with scars. I tried to make sure it wasn’t triggering but I’m really sorry if it is. So I haven’t hurt myself in two years, although I used to do it fairly regularly. He has seen these scars, and although he’s never confronted me about them or challenged my ‘I climbed over some barbed wire drunk one time’ story, I suspect that may have an idea what they’re from. He knows I’m uncomfortable discussing them or having him look at them and he knows that I have depression and he may have put two and two together, but I like to convince myself he hasn’t.
I confessed to my last boyfriend that I cut myself it was happening while we were still together. He told me it made me unattractive and no one would want to be with me,and basically emotionally manipulated me into giving up. I wouldn’t bring it up by myself but if he ever confronts me about them I don’t know whether to keep up the excuse and lie to his face, or to admit that I made the cuts myself and risk the consequences. I know if he broke up with me over it he wouldn’t be worth being with anyway, etc etc, but at the least, what if he gets really weird, or awkward about it??
Self-harm is a very private issue, so talk to them first about it before telling anyone else. Confronting them You may feel angry, upset and confused, but remember that your partner is in a difficult situation too. Be respectful, caring and open-minded. You can talk to your GP, a counsellor or support group for specific advice. Self-harm is more likely to be a way of managing painful feelings and is not necessarily a sign of severe depression , threat of suicide or mental illness.

My boyfriend was looking up the effects Tumeric has on H. S patients and he came across this forum. I read your post and decided to make an account to respond to you. First I would like to give you some background information on me so you can better understand the different psychological effects this disease has on its victims. Growing up, I never had a problem with my skin. I always had clear and pretty skin and people would often bring this to my attention with compliments.
Connect with other mental health advocates 2. Medication works really well for me. During a hospitalization in the psych ward, I was prescribed Lithium and immediately saw my self-injurious thoughts dissipate. Months later, when I briefly went off the medication, they returned with a vengeance. This was the first time I cut in 10 years.
A fashion brand has been praised for using models with self-harm scars but others fear it could promote cutting. Brand Goodbye Bread says it is “a community of the coolest girls in the room #GBSQUAD” and some of their models are heavily.
When everything you do seems like a struggle. Where you dont wanna leave the house because you know everyone is judging you. Where you cant even ask for directions in fear that they critise you. Where everyone always seems to be picking out your flaws. That feeling where you feel so damn sick for no reason. Do you know that feeling where you look in the mirror and completly hate what you see. When you grab handfuls and handfuls of fat and just want to cut it all off.
That feeling when you see other beautiful girls and just wish you looked like them. When you compare yourself to everyone you meet. When you realise why no one ever showed intrest in you.

By taking care of wounds in the first place you can decrease the severity of scaring. Special make-up for scars — not just for girls! I did some research about this myself before I talked to my GP about it.
I found that there appears to be two main organisations who work in this area: The consultant I saw was really nice and helpful and also very professional in her approach — she never asked anything about how the scarring happened — although it is fairly obvious. She first worked with trying to get colours of cream which matched my skin best. This actually took much longer than usual — we found a good colour for my forearms but it was difficult to match the creams with my upper arms.
In the end two creams were mixed together to achieve the best colour. Next she showed me how to apply the cream and then got me to apply some and also blend it into my natural skin tone. She also recommended that I get a darker fixing powder to use if my arms got a bit suntanned.
